Nepal's Political Scene Sees Significant Partnership Formed By Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a significant move ahead of the upcoming national polls, a pair of high-profile figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition emerges in the wake of widespread and fatal young people's demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the removal of the sitting government.

A Pledge to Address Young People's Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly pledged to prioritize the issues raised by the new generation. This commitment comes after the turbulent anti-corruption unrest that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable loss of life.

"Agreement should not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane following the deal was signed.

The September uprising was sparked by public frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a spark for underlying resentment stemming from years of economic stagnation and longstanding accusations of systemic political corruption.

Terms of the Fresh Electoral Agreement

According to the official pact, the positions for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing broad public dissatisfaction with the country's established political leadership. He has previously served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central figure in Nepal's current political shift. He was instrumental in setting up the interim government that took over after the previous administration was removed.

Broader Political Discussions Underway

In a separate event, the current interim prime minister over the weekend held consultations with several leading political figures. These talks included former prime ministers and the presidents of rival mainstream parties, marking the first such dialogue since the time of the protests.

Following these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a free and fair election is a collective duty. The message affirmed the government's dedication to ensuring a secure and fear-free atmosphere for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
